What an amazing post. You totally nailed it. I not only gave up buying CDs a few years ago, I sold all the CDs I owned, which gave me cold sweats for a while, and still does occasionally. At the very least, I may regret down the line not saving the CDs I absolutely loved--all my Elvis Costellos, for example. This is a release I am excited to buy, but I will do exactly as you say--I will rip it to mp3 immediately at a pretty high bit rate, then store the CDs in a box somewhere, as an archival item/collectors fetish object, and possibly never touch them again.
